Hydrangea heteromalla - Himalayan Hydrangea
Hydrangea heteromalla belongs (as do :Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea xanthoneura) to the subgroup Heteromallae . Hydrangea heteromalla and H.xanthoneura are found from Nepal to North East China but are absent in Japan , the paniculata we find also in Japan and Taiwan .
Hydrangea heteromalla is a mountain dweller , you will find it to heights of 500m to 2000m , even though some were found at a higher altitude ( 3000m ) .
This large shrubs or small trees are reaching in their region of origin often even 6m to 10m height , in our climate the height is usually limited to 3 - 4m .
The leaves are usually oval , oblong to oval , quite thick in texture , beautifully grained and can be both hairy and smooth.
The inflorescence consists of flat umbels with inner fertile and outer sterile flowers , most species bloom in May, June or July , the young flowers are white, later in summer and autumn turning tot old rose.
As with the macrophylla and serrata species, sterile florets turn at the end of the flowering period to indicate that pollination is accomplished .
Because of its size, Hydrangea heteromalla is suitable for larger gardens , he prefers a place in filtered sunlight or partial shade (no highnoon sun ) , sufficiently moist soil but however in winter the soil may not be to moist ! The plant is super hardy and we find it in Europe, even as far as in Finland .
Hydrangea heteromalla ' Nepal Beauty' enchants with its leaves , both the blade edge and the blade steal are colored beautifully contrasting red .
